Kacey Musgraves Talks About Questioning a Fundamental Truth in NPR’s ‘Wild Card’
In a revealing moment on NPR's , Grammy-winning artist Kacey Musgraves took a deep dive into a significant belief she once held, and how her experiences led her to question it. Known for her genre-defying music, which blends traditional country themes with a progressive outlook, Musgraves has never shied away from addressing complex topics. But this time, it wasn’t a song that did the talking — it was a candid reflection about a “bedrock truth” that she once thought was unshakable.
Growing up in a conservative, small town in Texas, Musgraves was surrounded by certain societal norms that weren’t questioned much. One of the most ingrained beliefs where she came from was the perception of LGBTQ+ people. As she shared with NPR host Rachel Martin, her exposure to openly queer individuals was limited at best.
She recalled that the narrative she absorbed was very much about “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” For Kacey, this perspective on sexual orientation seemed like an undeniable truth back then — something that was simply accepted by the majority without much critical thought.
But like many people, Musgraves' worldview started to shift when she left home. Moving to Nashville for her music career introduced her to a much more diverse and inclusive community, where she began to meet and make friends from all walks of life, including members of the LGBTQ+ community.
