10 mythical creatures that existed in real life
Mythical creatures have always fascinated human beings. Throughout history, we have heard tales of mythical beasts and supernatural beings that exist only in our imagination. However, it turns out that some of these creatures may have actually existed in real life.
1. Mermaids: Known for their half-human, half-fish form, mermaids have been part of folklore for centuries. Surprisingly, there is evidence to suggest that ancient sailors may have mistaken manatees or dugongs for these enchanting creatures.
2. Griffin: This mythical creature, with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, was believed to guard treasure. Fossils of Protoceratops, a dinosaur with a beak-like head crest, have been found and are thought to have inspired the griffin myth.
3. Cyclops: The one-eyed Cyclops from Greek mythology may have been inspired by extinct animals such as Deinotherium, an ancient elephant-like creature with one huge tusk in the center of its head.
4. Kraken: This giant sea monster is often depicted as a giant squid that can take down ships. While evidence of the Kraken's existence remains elusive, colossal squids have been discovered with tentacles that can reach up to 46 feet in length.
5. Dragons: These fire-breathing creatures have a prominent place in many myths and legends. Fossil discoveries, such as those of the dinosaur Spinosaurus, suggest that our ancestors may have encountered giant reptiles that could have inspired stories of dragons.
