Season One
In 1958, Miriam 'Midge' Maisel is living her dream. She lives in New York City with her husband, Joel, and their two children, Ethan and Esther. Joel, a businessman, moonlights as a comedian at a local club. After Joel plagiarizes a comedy set and bombs on stage, he leaves Midge for his secretary.
Devastated, Midge gets drunk and winds up on the same stage, discovering her knack for stand-up comedy. Arrested for exposing herself during the act, she meets Lenny Bruce, a famous comedian, in jail, who bails her out.
Midge starts working with a manager named Susie Myerson.
Her parents, Abe and Rose, are supportive but confused by Midge's new career path. Midge and Joel initially plan to divorce, but after their separation, they maintain love interest throughout each season.
Season Two
Season two finds Midge and her family vacationing in the Catskills. Midge is now working part-time at the makeup counter at B. Altman and pursues her comedy career at night.
Susie pushes Midge to tour and expand her audience reach, leading her to perform in various locales. This season explores Midge's struggle to balance her personal life with her growing comedy career.
Their marital status remains uncertain as Joel grapples with his feelings. Near the end of the season, Midge decides to go full-time with her comedy career, which she announces to her family.
