Long ago, cathedrals dealt with mice and rats by using cats. They carved a cat-sized opening in the grand doors to create a cat door. The Exeter Cathedral, dating back to the 13th century, required many cats to keep it free of vermin. The cats were paid for their service, with records showing payments made to them between 1305 and 1467.
