In a deeply emotional and powerful interview, General Hospital actor Jens Austin Astrup has opened up about one of the most tragic moments of his life—the death of his father. On Maurice Benard’s State of Mind podcast, Astrup shared details about his family’s struggles and the impact of his father’s suicide when he was just 15. His revelation not only sheds light on his personal journey but also highlights the strength it took to face years of trauma and emotional turmoil.
For many, losing a parent is an event that changes the course of their life forever. For Astrup, his father’s death marked the beginning of a long and painful journey. Astrup revealed that his father had been battling severe depression for years, and his emotional struggles were compounded by financial difficulties and feelings of guilt and regret.
The culmination of these challenges led to his tragic decision to take his own life.
Reflecting on his father’s mental health struggles, Astrup explained, “Life was getting too hard. I think even money was too hard for him.” The loss of his father was made even more difficult by the fact that his parents were divorced at the time, and his mother was homeless. At just 15 years old, Astrup and his sister were forced to live with relatives they barely knew, their great aunt and uncle, who had only met them once before the tragedy.
