If there’s one thing Blake Shelton knows how to do, it’s to keep things entertaining, even when it comes to his legendary friendship with fellow country star Toby Keith. The bond between these two giants of country music has always been full of humor, and Shelton recently shared one of his funniest attempts to get under Keith's skin — an endeavor that didn't go exactly as planned.
Blake Shelton and Toby Keith’s relationship dates back to the early 2000s when Shelton was just beginning to make a name for himself.
Fresh out of the gate, Shelton found himself opening for Keith on tour, an experience that played a huge role in his budding career. For over a year, Shelton watched as Keith dominated crowds with his larger-than-life performances while Shelton worked to gain recognition in the shadow of Keith's already booming popularity. But that didn’t mean there wasn’t room for a little fun on the road.
As Shelton recalls, the two often spent time together outside of performances, indulging in some light-hearted competition — whether it was pick-up basketball games or friendly verbal jabs.
Keith, known for his tough exterior and sharp wit, was the king of country at the time, and Shelton knew exactly how to push his buttons.
During one of their tours, Shelton decided it was time to have a little fun with his mentor. He was still an up-and-coming artist, but that didn’t stop him from poking fun at Keith, who had just come off a night where he had been nominated for multiple awards but didn’t win any.
