Hold on to your bonnets, "Outlander" fans! The final season promises to be a wild ride, but before we dive into the blood and guts of what's to come, let's talk about the iron-stomached woman at the center of it all: Caitriona Balfe.
Caitriona Balfe: "Outlander's" Unflappable Queen of Gore
"Outlander" isn't exactly for the faint of heart. From 18th-century battlefield surgeries to, let's just say, unique medical procedures, Claire Fraser has seen it all.
And actress Caitriona Balfe? Apparently, she’s about as easily grossed out as a seasoned butcher.
According to the show's writers, Balfe is the polar opposite of squeamish. On the official "Outlander" podcast, writer Anne Kenney and executive producer Ronald D. Moore spilled the beans on Balfe's apparent immunity to on-screen gore. "Caitríona, I've never known her to be any kind of squeamish about any of this stuff," Kenney revealed, adding with a chuckle that even "cooked rabbits" (a common sight in the show) didn't phase the Irish actress.
Ronald D. Moore seconded the sentiment, stating flatly, "I don't think she is. I don't think she has any problems with it." He recalled Balfe's baptism by blood: "Day one on the show is her in the field hospital in World War II with open wounds and blood spurting everywhere, raw, really nasty stuff. So, I think she got over it really quickly." Talk about a trial by fire – or, more accurately, by fake blood!
