Tiger Woods arrived at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland for The Open Championship under less-than-ideal circumstances. The golf legend revealed that an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump left him sleepless and unprepared for the major tournament.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Woods admitted that the shocking news disrupted his mental state during his flight from Florida to Scotland. “I wasn’t in the right frame of mind,” Woods shared, reflecting on the events that unfolded en route to The Open.
A Distracted Flight
The assassination attempt on Trump occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire just minutes after Trump began speaking, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. Trump himself was shot in the ear, and the assailant was subsequently shot dead. The incident dominated the news, and Woods found himself unable to sleep during the flight.
“It was a long night,” Woods explained. “That’s all we watched the entire time on the way over here. I didn’t sleep at all on the flight, and then we just got on the golf course.”
The Impact on Woods’ Preparation
Woods’ arrival at Royal Troon was marked by exhaustion and a lack of proper preparation. Despite these challenges, he pressed on with a practice round on Sunday, albeit under immense pressure.
