The buzz surrounding the revival of the groundbreaking series *Queer as Folk* has reached a fever pitch, as creator Stephen Dunn injects new life into a beloved classic. Originally a British drama centered on three gay men navigating life in Manchester, its American cousin found a home in Pittsburgh on Showtime in the early 2000s. Fast forward two decades, and Dunn has shifted the series’ narrative gears while keeping its quintessential heart intact.
Stephen Dunn wasn’t satisfied with just a simple reboot. “There were a lot of stories that I felt – and characters – that are directly a part of my queer family that I’ve just never seen on television before,” he explained. Indeed, the reimagined *Queer as Folk* confronts past criticisms of a lack of diversity head-on.
Dunn's commitment to authenticity means ensuring queer roles are portrayed by actors who embody the lived experience. “It was very important also to include trans and non-binary storylines at the center,” he added, emphasizing a dedication to genuine representation.
The opening of the new series shook audiences with a powerful scene depicting a mass shooting at a crowded gay club.
