What They Didn’t Want You to Know
Downton Abbey may look like the epitome of grandeur and grace on screen, but behind the curtains, the reality of what happens on set is far from glamorous. While millions of fans are captivated by the elegant drama of the Crawleys and their household, the cast and crew have had their fair share of jaw-dropping experiences while filming. What are they hiding from us? It turns out, Downton Abbey might just have its own set of secrets that are even more shocking than any on-screen scandal.
The Endless Banquet: A True Test of Patience
One of the most iconic elements of Downton Abbey is its grand dining room scenes. Who could forget those lavish dinners with endless dishes spread across an ornate table? Yet, behind the elegant façade, the actors have come to dread these moments. Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham) and Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora) recently shared that filming these scenes is nothing short of a nightmare.
As picturesque as it looks, the dining table setups are painstakingly long, requiring hours for every angle, every reaction. According to Bonneville, “By 10 a.m., the salmon had started to turn”—not exactly the kind of aristocratic luxury you might expect!
Worse still, the actors had to master the art of pretending to eat without actually eating, otherwise, they’d be forced to consume bite after bite from every take.
