The announcement reflects on the magazine’s rich history, stating, “After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual reality realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on.
Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.”
Game Informer began its journey in 1991 under the video game retailer FuncoLand. It was later acquired by GameStop in 2000. At its peak in 2011, the magazine circulated 8 million copies in the U.S., making it the third-largest magazine in the country. The magazine’s inclusion in GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards membership program significantly boosted its reach and sales.
However, the magazine faced challenges in the years that followed. By 2017, its circulation had decreased slightly to 7 million copies. In 2019, GameStop made significant staff reductions at Game Informer, cutting roughly half of the magazine’s workforce. The departure of key figures, including editor-in-chief and founder Andy McNamara in 2020, followed by Andrew Reiner’s exit in 2022, marked a period of instability.
