C Spire, a telecommunications and technology company based in Mississippi, has swiftly withdrawn its advertising from the 2024 Paris Olympics following widespread outrage over a performance during the opening ceremony. The company made the announcement on Saturday morning, just hours after the controversial event.
“We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics. C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics,” the company stated on X.
C Spire did not disclose details about the nature of its advertisements or the financial investment made in the Olympic advertising campaign. However, the company’s decision underscores the intense backlash against the performance, which involved drag queens and dancers appearing to parody Leonardo da Vinci’s famous depiction of the Last Supper.
Company President and CEO Suzy Hays expressed her disapproval in a statement, emphasizing the company's support for athletes but condemning what she described as an “offensive and unacceptable” portrayal. “C Spire is supportive of our athletes who have worked so hard to be a part of the Olympics. However, we will not be a part of the offensive and unacceptable mockery of the Last Supper,” Hays said.
