Doreen Brooks, a remarkable figure in history who played a crucial role in cracking the Enigma code during World War II, has recently celebrated her 103rd birthday at the Anchor’s Millfield care home in Oldham.
Born on July 17, 1921, Doreen's impressive life has been marked by her significant contributions during the war. She was part of a team responsible for intercepting German messages, which were then forwarded to the British Intelligence Service at Bletchley Park.
It was here that Alan Turing’s pioneering Enigma machine decoded these vital communications.
Doreen’s invaluable service was acknowledged earlier this year with a purple plaque, a testament to her extraordinary efforts and dedication during a critical period in history. Now, as she reaches this incredible milestone, her life is celebrated not just for her wartime achievements but also for her enduring spirit.
To mark her 103rd birthday, Doreen was surrounded by fellow residents of the Millfield care home and staff from Anchor’s care team. The occasion was made even more special with a homemade birthday cake and a bouquet of flowers presented by Alison Corley, the manager of Millfield care home.
Alison Corley shared her admiration for Doreen, noting, “I could listen to Doreen talk about her fascinating life experiences all day.
