World Rugby Clarifies Stance on Springboks' 7-1 Bench Split: No Ban in Sight
As rugby fans, we've all witnessed the growing debates and discussions surrounding the Springboks’ "Bomb Squad" tactic, especially with its resurgence in recent tournaments. This unique strategy, which involves a 7-1 split on the bench, has garnered both admiration and criticism in equal measure. However, World Rugby has recently made it clear that they have no intentions of banning this tactic, despite the controversy it stirs.
World Rugby's chief executive, Alan Gilpin, weighed in on the matter, shedding light on the governing body's scientific evaluation of the 7-1 bench split. “We looked at it from a science, medicine perspective," said Gilpin. "Was there a distinctive view that a bunch of fresh players coming on with 20-30 minutes to go is going to create a more injurious position, and the science said that’s not the case.
" In other words, the notion that a heavier bench filled with forwards could lead to more injuries has been debunked. No medical evidence has surfaced that would warrant banning the tactic, which is why World Rugby has chosen to leave it as is for now.
