In the world of beach volleyball, the attire of female athletes has long been a topic of conversation. Traditionally, players competed in bikinis, but recent weather conditions at the 2024 Paris Olympics have shifted the conversation in a new direction.
On the first day of the games, the Canadian and American women’s beach volleyball teams faced off under less-than-ideal weather conditions. Due to the chilly temperatures and rain, the athletes opted for leggings and sports bras instead of their usual bikinis.
This choice led to an unexpected backlash from some viewers who took to social media to voice their displeasure.
Among the complaints, one viewer lamented, “Add it to the list of reasons as to why I’m not watching the Olympics,” while another remarked, “Every four years, I become a women’s beach volleyball enthusiast,” followed by, “‘Leggings in beach volleyball is a crime.” These comments reflect a broader dissatisfaction from a segment of fans who felt the traditional attire was being compromised.
Conversely, many defended the athletes, praising their choice to wear more practical clothing given the weather. “Congratulations to the female athletes who fought so hard to be able to wear pants while they play beach volleyball,” one supporter wrote. Another added, “It’s about time the women’s uniforms in volleyball matched the men’s…the most sexist outfits in all of the Olympics were in women’s beach volleyball.
