Bimbo Bakeries USA and Quality Custom Distribution, two major players in the food industry, are set to close operations in the San Antonio area, resulting in the layoff of a combined 195 employees. Despite the coinciding nature of these closures, they are unrelated.
Bimbo Bakeries USA Closing San Antonio Facility
Bimbo Bakeries USA has announced the closure of its San Antonio bakery and distribution site, leading to the layoff of 138 employees by early October.
The closure will affect the bakery and warehouse located at 512 S. Gevers St., with operations set to cease by October 5. This shutdown is part of a broader restructuring effort by the company, which is embarking on a significant overhaul of its North American operations.
The company, which is part of Mexico City-based Grupo Bimbo, the largest baking company in the world with operations spanning 35 countries, has also announced the closure of two additional facilities in New York state.
Bimbo Bakeries will transition production to other bakeries within its network that are better positioned for future growth, according to a company statement.
The San Antonio workers are represented by Local 111 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union. Bimbo Bakeries stated that seniority-based bumping rights for the affected employees will be governed by the union’s existing contract.
