Let’s be honest, folks, awards shows are usually about as exciting as watching paint dry. But this year’s CMAs? Honey, they lit a fire hotter than a Texas summer, all thanks to a certain Stetson-wearing, smooth-talking legend: George Strait.
Seventy-two years young and still smoother than a shot of top-shelf whiskey, the King of Country, George Strait, moseyed on into the Bridgestone Arena for the 58th Annual CMA Awards.
This wasn't just another Wednesday night for old George, though. Nope, this was a coronation. The CMAs were finally bestowing upon him the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. And you know what that means: a whole lotta rhinestones and a whole lotta heartfelt tributes.
Now, Miranda Lambert, bless her heart, she took the reins on this tribute like a rodeo queen on a prize-winning stallion.
She rounded up a posse of country music royalty – Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jamey Johnson, and Parker McCollum – to serenade the King with a medley of his greatest hits.
First up, Lainey Wilson, with a voice as sweet as pecan pie, poured her heart and soul into "Amarillo by Morning." The crowd swayed, remembering lost loves and dusty dance floors. Then Jamey Johnson, with that gritty voice that could make a rusty nail weep, belted out "Give It Away.
