Country star Miranda Lambert has always been known for her no-holds-barred approach to music, but her latest breakup anthem, “Dammit Randy!,” struck an emotional chord at home—bringing her husband, Brendan McLoughlin, to tears. The twist? McLoughlin, a former NYPD officer with no songwriting experience, co-wrote the track, marking his unexpected debut in the music world.
Lambert recently opened up about the experience on Bunnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast, revealing that the song came about in a rather unconventional way. “He’s super excited about it, too,” Lambert shared. “He came in one afternoon, and I was like, ‘I wanna play you something.’ I pushed play, and he got a little misty-eyed. He was like, ‘You cut my song?’ It was awesome, and it’s one of my favorites on the record.”
The story behind McLoughlin’s songwriting involvement started with some casual trash-talking.
Lambert recounted how McLoughlin, who had never penned a song before, joked about the simplicity of songwriting while talking to her and co-writer Jesse Frasure. “My husband is a retired police officer, not a songwriter,” Lambert explained. “One day he was just talking sh*t to Jesse, saying, ‘Writing’s not that hard! It’s easy.’ Jesse challenged him, saying, ‘Oh, okay,’ and the next thing you know, Brendan was in the studio.
