Serena Williams, the legendary tennis player and four-time Olympic gold medalist, recently found herself at the center of controversy when she publicly accused The Peninsula Paris of denying her access to its rooftop restaurant. Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, took to X (formerly Twitter) on August 5 to share her dismay. “Yikes @peninsulaparis I’ve been denied access to rooftop to eat in an empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids.
Always a first. #Olympic2024,” she tweeted.
The Peninsula’s Response
The Peninsula Paris quickly responded to the backlash. The hotel issued a statement apologizing for the incident and explained that on the evening in question, the rooftop bar was fully booked. The only available tables were in their gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was also reserved.
The hotel reassured that they have always valued Williams as a guest and would continue to welcome her and her family. “Unfortunately, our rooftop bar was indeed fully booked and the only unoccupied tables you saw belonged to our gourmet restaurant, L’Oiseau Blanc, which was fully reserved,” the hotel’s statement read. They concluded with, “We have always been honored to welcome you and will always be to welcome you again.
