Simone Biles, the celebrated gymnast, has taken to social media to set the record straight after her husband, Jonathan Owens, faced criticism for wearing one of her Olympic gold medals. The controversy erupted when Owens posted a celebratory photo on Instagram showing him wearing Biles' gold medal, which led to a flood of comments accusing him of overshadowing his wife’s achievements.
A Medal Controversy?
The photo in question was shared on July 31, capturing a joyous moment between Biles and Owens.
The NFL star’s caption read, “Witnessing history every time you step on the mat. Congrats, baby, on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful I was there to see it.” This heartfelt tribute to Biles' historic accomplishment was met with both applause and criticism.
Some users applauded Biles’ success and cheered her on, but others took issue with Owens’ decision to wear the medal.
Comments ranged from “Why is he holding it like he won it?” to more pointed critiques like, “Mr. Simone Biles, if you don’t give that woman back her medal like (be for real).” The criticism continued on TikTok, where Kiera Breaugh expressed her disapproval in a widely viewed video, arguing that Owens' act seemed to detract from Biles' moment.
Biles Defends Her Husband
On August 1, Biles responded directly to the backlash in the comments of Breaugh’s TikTok post.
