A family of nine from Tulsa, Oklahoma, saw their long-anticipated Alaskan cruise turn into a nightmare when a bus mix-up left them stranded in Ketchikan, Alaska. The ordeal was compounded by a staggering $9,000 fine imposed by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), creating a series of unfortunate events that marred what was meant to be a joyful family vacation.
The trouble began when Caitlyn and Joshua Gault, along with their six children and grandmother Sharron McElmurry, were part of a cruise on the Norwegian Encore, a luxury liner operated by NCL.
The family had embarked on this journey as a reunion, having spent around $30,000 for the trip, which included a lumberjack show excursion in Ketchikan.
According to the Gault family, the trouble started when they returned from the lumberjack show and found themselves unable to board the bus that was supposed to take them back to the cruise ship. They claimed that the bus was overbooked with non-ticketed passengers from another ship, and the excursion operator was not checking tickets properly.
This issue led to the Gault family missing their scheduled transport and, subsequently, their ship.
“We see the chaos getting onto the buses,” Joshua Gault recounted. “We go to get on the bus and one of the attendees is like ‘The bus is full, and you know you got to wait for the next bus.'”
After waiting for what they thought was the next bus, the family discovered that the ship had already departed.
