On the morning of February 4, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded at the North Decatur Las Vegas Athletic Club (LVAC) swimming pool, resulting in the death of Leticia Gonzales Triplett, 58. A US Air Force veteran, Triplett’s last moments were captured on surveillance video, revealing a distressing scene where she struggled to stay afloat while numerous swimmers passed by, seemingly unaware of her plight.
Triplett, who entered the pool with crutches, was seen battling to swim and maintain her position by gripping the pool’s side and kicking her legs.
Despite her visible struggle and efforts to stay above water, she eventually moved to the pool steps, where she clung to the hand rail in a desperate bid to stay afloat.
As disturbing footage shows, several swimmers walked past her, either failing to notice her struggle or not recognizing the severity of the situation. Triplett was seen clinging to the rail, her head occasionally dipping underwater.
Despite her attempts to signal for help, it appears that no one intervened. She ultimately lost her grip and floated lifelessly in the pool for approximately ten minutes before being spotted by a swimmer in an adjacent pool. This bystander promptly alerted others, who then helped pull her from the water.
Dr. Stephen Benning, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, suggested that the bystanders’ failure to recognize the distress may be attributed to the "bystander effect.
