In an effort to address the Secret Service's response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has appointed a distinguished panel of experts to conduct a 45-day independent review. Heading this bipartisan panel is Janet Napolitano, former Secretary of Homeland Security. The review aims to thoroughly examine the events of July 13 and provide real-time recommendations for enhancing the safety protocols for current and former U.
S. presidents.
Joining Napolitano on the panel are two security officials from former President George W. Bush’s administration: Frances Townsend, former Homeland Security Advisor, and Mark Filip, former Deputy Attorney General. Additionally, David Mitchell, the former superintendent of Maryland State Police and former public safety chief in Delaware, will lend his expertise to the investigation.
Secretary Mayorkas hinted that more experts might be added to the panel in the coming days to ensure a comprehensive review.
The primary goal of the panel is to conduct a thorough review of the U.S. Secret Service's planning, actions, and policies surrounding the rally on the day of the shooting attempt. This includes assessing the coordination between federal, state, and local authorities before, during, and after the incident.
